    Lights in the Night

    Bachelor Art Education

    Lichter in der Nacht,Anna Raselli,Farb-Licht-Zentrum / ZHdK

At night the illuminated windows from the houses across the street reveal intimate scenes. Together they form a secret code or create shapes reminiscent of foreign characters.
Over a longer period of time these lights were photographed. An infinite number of combinations of illuminated windows presents itself. From the 120 total pictures, no two are the same. It is a kind of game of chance, for it is possible to determine the time intervals, camera position and exposure time, but which windows will be illuminated is left to the individuals in the apartments who have no idea that the pho- tographs are being taken.
With the material collected any number of image sequences can be created, and it is possible to show the viewer a coherent sequence of illuminated windows. The windows seem to imitate a kind of motion and to communicate with one another. There is something intimate about the work, as the continual repetition of moments that have been preserved opens up new realms. For a brief moment one’s own reality collides with another − but these encounters are one-sided. The traces that the individuals leave behind through the light are fragile and fleeting.
The pictures present a new way of working with the codes that have been gathered. An application was programmed which by means of a random generator creates RGB colour fields in the shape of the windows. These are then projected onto a black surface. The façade image that was shown is translated into an abstract play of colours that moves and changes to a steady rhythm. Unthinkable colour mixtures and patterns appear and are combined to create colour resonances.
