Not only since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, although since then refugees, visiting students and “regular” students living in Switzerland have been increasingly been encountering refugees from Ukraine (with status S) and refugees from other non-European regions (with status F) on the Toni Campus – people from different education systems, people of privilege and precarious migrants. This co-existence and cooperation raises questions: How open and accessible is a Swiss university of the arts like ZHdK? Who is included and who is excluded? What are the reasons and goals in mind? What responsibility does a university like ours have in the context of such developments? What standards does it implement and how receptive is it to skills that are not its own? How are concepts such as the accessibility and diversity of a university challenged?

This exploration requires a public sphere. A space in which people can debate and ask questions, a place of discussion, friendship and conflict. Diverse Realities attempts to create such a space in both virtual and real terms, in the form of a website as well as interventions on the Toni Campus. With enthusiastic sincerity, tenacious nimbleness, meticulous attention to detail and respectful interaction with one another. Reality is sufficiently diverse; we need to learn to live with it.
