    Visualising the Intangible

    Collaborative mapping strategies for organisations

    MAS Strategic Design

Visualising the Intangible. Collaborative mapping strategies for organisations, Kersten Bepler, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste

This thesis examines how collaborative mapping fosters a shared cross-departmental understanding and which organizational conditions determine whether this understanding is sustainable in the long term. To this end, the author is working with the Kunsthaus Zürich as an external strategic designer. Through interviews, observations, and mapping interventions focused on exhibition planning, she examines how the joint mapping and visualization of roles, processes, and dependencies makes interconnections visible and open to discussion. The study addresses the problem that cross-departmental teams often lose a shared understanding of interconnections during periods of rapid growth or restructuring. Responsibilities are interpreted differently, information remains implicit, and interrelationships go untapped. As a result, Kersten Bepler presents a mapping starter framework that enables stakeholders to gain a shared overview of an initiative and consciously map out who should be involved—thereby achieving clearer coordination between departments.
