The duality of light and shadow is at centerpiece of the kinetic light installation. Light can only be created with darkness and darkness only with light.
Three light and shadow projectors hang in a row from the ceiling of the exhibition space. Each projects light or shadow onto the opposite wall.
The light sources are located at the ends of rods and are moved back and forth by motors. In front of each is a tube. One of them is open, the other closed, so that light is projected onto one side and shadow onto the other side of the wall.
The duality of light and shadow is not only realised visually here, but the projection of light and shadow is physically coupled. This means that every movement of the light spot leads to an equivalent movement of the shadow and vice versa. It can be observed how the room becomes darker when only the light spots are visible and conversely it becomes brighter when only the shadows are projected, an apparent contradiction. When the light passes right through the tube, a visual inversion process occurs. The light or shadow appears to move to the opposite side.
