    Tales on Rails

A digital game concept for railway passengers

    Institut für Designforschung (IDE)

The research project "Tales on Rails" deals with a digital game concept for rail passengers and was developed in cooperation with zb Zentralbahn AG. In it, game mechanics were researched on the Zentralbahn network and digital prototypes were developed and analysed. The final result is a game app, which was released at the end of July 2019.

Since summer 2019, the Brünig Line has been running a game app that accompanies passengers on their journey and offers an experience made up of Swiss traditions, gaming and discovering the countryside. The content is tailored to the interests of the target group. The dramaturgy is determined by the timetable: On the one hand, there are experience markers in the train that unlock content in the game. On the other hand, the stories are based on the view from the train window. The game can be played during the journey, season and weather have no negative effect on playability. A technologically challenging solution was implemented with Augmented Reality. The concept can be gradually increased in its technical complexity in order to achieve scalability of the project.
