The Swarms project acts as an umbrella for various ongoing and completed artistic and scientific activities that deal with the development and application of swarm simulations as generative mechanisms for the creation of music and imagery. The project serves as long term continuation of two previous research projects entitled Interactive Swarm Orchestra (ISO) and Interactive Swarm Space (ISS).
The Swarms project acts as an umbrella for various ongoing and completed artistic and scientific activities that deal with the development and application of swarm simulations as generative mechanisms for the creation of music and imagery. The project serves as long term continuation of two previous research projects entitled Interactive Swarm Orchestra (ISO) and Interactive Swarm Space (ISS), both of which were funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The Swarms project places a particular emphasis on the following topics:
- The development of creative approaches that situate the design and customisation of swarm simulations as core aspects of an artistic and musical strategy.
- The application of swarm simulations to establish algorithmic and aesthetic coherence across different media.
- The experimentation with interaction concepts and modalities that support intuitive and immersive forms of engagement with swarm simulations.
- The realization of responsive and emergent environments that employ swarm simulations as central behavioral constituents.
The project activities comprise the development of software and hardware tools, the realisation of exemplary artistic works, and the dissemination of practical and theoretical results in workshops and scientific publications. The website swarms.cc provides access to software tools, documentation and publications and also serves as a platform to showcase various artistic works that have been realised in the context of this project.
