The combination of game mechanic and musical collaboration in an immersive 3D environment forms the basis of our project. We want to explore which game mechanics assigned to a) the performer b) the environment, and c) the spectators, have which effect on the musical interaction within a collaborative environment. We are interested in finding those mechanics, which provide an artistic output that also has the potential for a concert situation.
„Games in Concert“ tries to push and to eliminate boundaries of traditional roles in the musical world – which are the instrument creator (luthieretc.), the composer, the interpreter and the listener.
Since Cage’s first works with transistor radios, the possibility of using electronics and computers in collaborative music making has inspired musicians and researchers alike to create instruments, installations and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE), inspiring many people, fostering the development of new forms of music and visual arts. At the same time, game design has made its way from being a niche form of entertainment to a multi-million dollar industry. Independent Game design and new forms of experimental game arts paved the way for these developments. The submitted project will therefore also base on electronic arts avant-garde. Although the means of expression in both audiovisual art- and game-design are very similar, those two worlds rarely seem to collaborate or inspire each other.
