Autonomous Camerman for event production

Institut für Designforschung (IDE)

In event production, directors coordinate cameramen to focus on different targets and adjust camera framing. By automating the tracking and framing tasks of overview cameras, it's possible to minimize 'cost per event' and significantly increase market share. The autonomous cameraman will revolutionize the recording process moving towards the Industry 4.0 version of event recording.

By replacing the fixed cost of cameramen personnel with automatic camera steering systems, it is estimated that the cost of recordings can be lowered by 40% compared to the current workflow. Evidently, the whole event production value chain will benefit greatly from a high grade of automation, reducing the production team per event to minimum personnel, allowing to address more events per employee, instigating growth. The main challenge of the project is to design novel camera movement algorithms reassuring that the automatic steering system can achieve the same video quality level as a human operator.
