Since 2003, the artists-in-labs program has been facilitating artistic research by way of long-term residencies for artists in scientific laboratories and research institutes. It is part of the Department of Cultural Analysis (DKV) and promotes sustainable collaboration between artists and scientists of all disciplines, not just in Switzerland but all around the world. These long-term interdisciplinary and cross-border collaborations provide artists with an opportunity to critically engage with the sciences and their experimental and aesthetic dimensions.
The International Residency Exchange projects aim to build up international networks in Art and Science with the goal to establish sustainable and long-term collaborations between scientific and cultural institutions worldwide.
Our international art-science residencies in science laboratories provide artists with the opportunity to engage with scientists for several months on a global scale. The (cultural) setting and framing as well as the historical traditions are responsible for results in the sciences and in the arts. Therefore the possibility of a transcultural and transdisciplinary dialog and by juxtaposing concepts and procedures of different countries and knowledge cultures, offers a significant room to reflect on ideas and ideologies of the other, the foreign or the unfamiliar, and to explore a range of scientific topics, methods and technologies as well as the site of the laboratory, in renown science laboratories worldwide.
