Artistic projects that function both symbolically and provide freely usable resources are regarded as creating a form of commons and examined transdisciplinarily from an art theoretical and social science perspective.
Commons are resources created and/or managed by a community for the benefit of all. Selected artistic projects of alternative resource generation and use are examined as digital commons in an interdisciplinary manner. Not only do the resources themselves play an important role in the research, but also the communities they manage and their dynamic organizational principles. The tripartite approach of Commons-Commoners-Commoning results in research questions with regard to content, formal and aesthetic innovations of the projects examined as well as their model character for larger social dynamics. The interdisciplinary generated research data are made accessible to a heterogeneous target group as artistic and scientific works. The collaboration with the Haus der elektronischen Künste (HeK, Basel) ensures communication with an art-oriented audience.
Scientific and social context:
In a rapidly changing cultural environment, commons can form models of a democratic, inclusive knowledge order. They offer concrete alternatives to the increasing commercialization of culture and its one-sided selective effects.
