The Zurich Centre for Musicians’ Hands

The Zurich Centre for Musicians’ Hands (ZZM), the Hand Laboratory of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), is integrated in the Music Physiology and Preventive Medicine Section of the Zurich University of the Arts and is affiliated to the Research Focus in Music Interpretation.

The methodology applied – the Biomechanical Hand Measurement (BHM) – was developed by the medical doctor and musician Christoph Wagner, who conducted research at the Max-Planck Institute in Dortmund and at the Music University of Hannover.

In parallel with ongoing fundamental research, the ZZM offers advice by means of the BHM. The BHM allows to devise individualized strategies for optimizing practicing and performance habits, as well as recommendations on an objective basis pertaining to the ergonomic optimization of instruments. Measurements and advice are free of cost for students and faculty of the Zurich University of the Arts. The ZZM also offers advice for persons not enrolled in or affiliated to the ZHdK.
