The United Nations’ international organization for the protection of refugees (UNHCR) is drawing attention to the issue of displaced women and girls with the “Art Stands with Refugee Women 2019” project at Art Basel. This year, the project aims to raise awareness not just of the problems but also of the courage and endurance shown by displaced women and girls who, all in all, represent more than half of all refugees across the globe.
In order to spread the word about this project, UNHCR has invited eleven artists alongside established names like Alfredo Jaar and Tania Bruguera to produce a series of posters. Among them is Nathalia Sierra Poveda, who is currently being supported at ZHdK through the “Access for Refugees” initiative. You can visit the exhibition, entitled “Where should birds fly after the last sky?”, at Art Basel on 12 June 2019.
