A human is a mother, is a crying face, is a vulnerable body, is a fearless fighter, is a curious spectator, is a nurtured child, is a working robot, is a place for boundary disputes. Not every human counts as a person.

Values received in history, hegemonic narratives, corporeal politics and juridical instruments define who will be endowed with the status of personhood; and at the same time, they create non-persons in the act of such delineation. The categorization determines which bodies are mourned, who are the monsters in the stories we tell, and whose memories and experiences become legible. What logics upholds these boundaries? How can the outlines of the category of personhood be challenged?

The exhibition “The Person in Question” addresses the production of “persons”, and the borderlines, where personhood as a category is in question. Curated by students of the Master Art Education Curatorial Studies, the exhibition takes place from 31 May to 28 June 2023 at the MIZ, Media and Information Center at Zurich University of the Arts. It activates the collection of the library and connects artistic positions, historical documents, and contemporary media.

With works by Antje Ehmann & Harun Farocki, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Ann Kern, Jota Mombaça, Mikołaj Sobczak, Isaac Chong Wai and others.
