Manuel Flurin Hendry’s scientific-artistic dissertation “The Feeling Machine” in the field of dramaturgy was defended at the Babelsberg Film University on 9 December 2024, with the distinction “summa cum laude”. The thesis examines computer-based systems for the recognition and simulation of emotions in the human face. What view of human nature are these systems based on? How do they relate to acting practice? And what is their artistic potential? These questions were explored through the artistic research project “The Feeling Machine,” an interactive sculpture that brings a virtual character to life through video projection and enables real-time conversation. The thesis’ culminating AI performance, “Friendly Fire at the Shrink,” premiered at the Schlachthaus Theater in Bern on 9 February 2025.
