For Ludovica Galleani dโ€™Agliano, design is an important tool for raising awareness about socially relevant issues. She is currently researching the identity of sex workers.

Frederic Poppenhaฬˆger: Why did you choose the Masterโ€™s in Trends & Identity?
Ludovica Galleani dโ€™Agliano: I want to better understand todayโ€™s society. Doing so will help us shape a better future. I was a bit surprised at first that the programme focuses on research rather than more directly on the practical aspect of design. But I also realized how important research is for doing solid and relevant project work.

You have received a Fondation ZHdK Excellence Scholarship. What are you working on at the moment?
Iโ€™m researching sex work from a post-cyberfeminist perspective. This topic is particularly relevant today because it brings together many aspects of modern society, such as feminism, technopositivism and mental health. My research is based on an ethnographic analysis of sex workersโ€™ identities, in relation to digital technologies. I decode, analyze and reorganize oppressive and stigmatizing codes. My research aims to reconstruct the identity of sex workers who are obstructed by the control systems of public space.

What are your plans after graduation?
Iโ€™d like to continue working and researching in the fields of gender, technology and sustainability.

What is your favourite place in Zurich?
The Shedhalle, an art offspace at the Rote Fabrik in Wollishofen. It hosts very interesting exhibitions and performances.

What has been your best decision so far?
To get on this programme! Although the creative field can be tough and competitive, I havenโ€™t regretted choosing this path. I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in such a creative, open and inspiring environment, which made me aware of many important issues that often remain unaddressed.
