Prof. André Bellmont is head of the Major programme Composition for Film, Theatre and Media at the ZHdK. During his exchange in Africa and India, he has been teaching, organising and conducting seminars, film music workshops and studio sessions, and has been involved in the organisation of congresses.

Which intention did you pursue by applying for a staff mobility?

With the desire to build contacts and to exchange and network with colleagues. In Switzerland, only the ZHdK offers a major programme in film and media composition.

What kind of professional exchange did you experience?

In the beginning, the focus was on the development of our own curriculum as well as on the exchange of expertise and content as well as methods and didactics. In this process, we became aware of our diversity, the importance of tradition and the environment of the different institutions and backgrounds of the people involved. Today, the focus has shifted to supporting colleagues whose work we would like to give visibility through the institutionalisation of our network.

To what extent has the objective of fostering an exchange been fulfilled?

Thus, the “Major – MA Composition and Theory, Composition for Film, Theatre and Media” is well positioned internationally today. To a large extent, this can certainly be attributed to our own international initiatives, but also to those of our international guest lecturers and students.

What competencies were you able to acquire and what perspectives have resulted for you from the exchange?

Besides the development of intercultural competences (respectfully interacting with people from other cultures, learning to accept diversity in cooperation), our network (IMMSANE, International Media Music Network in Education) offers a completely new perspective in international cooperation, which at the same time is a big challenge for all people involved.

What cultural insights are you bringing back from your exchange?

I already knew that Zurich and Switzerland are not the centre of the world. But compared to other HE institutions, our university is very well positioned, especially in terms of equipment and facilities. There's certainly nothing wrong with that. However, other cultures are particularly strong and diverse in the immaterial fields. They have enormous potential to develop. We should remain aware of this and take note of what is occurring in other places in the world.

With which experiences and results did you come back?

Serious preparation before the exchange is essential, even if everything turns out differently than planned. Carrying out an international project is one thing. Maintaining and cultivating the acquired contacts in order to keep them sustainable and effective is a completely different challenge that will keep me busy.
