The Manor Art Prize 2021 of the Canton of Zurich goes to the ZHdK Fine Arts Alumnus Mathis Altmann. The artist, born in Munich in 1987, completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the ZHdK in 2011 and lives in Los Angeles and Zurich. In addition to his artistic activities, he teaches at the Department of Fine Arts.
"In his works, Mathis Altmann mixes elements from pop culture and subculture. The installations allude to the consumer society and its exaggerated promises of prosperity. Cold neon light refers to the advertising industry, while elements of doll's houses, toy figures and model kits of houses suggest an intact, faรงade-like world. The assemblages of found objects from the trash and heavy metal culture, of waste and industrial materials suddenly turn the beautiful appearance into a dystopia. The works of art oscillate between the illusion of a glamorous world and the inevitable decay.
