Media Release. With the two cooperation projects "Sporthallenprovisorien" and "Provisorische Entwässerungsaquädukte", the Building Department of the Canton of Zurich is offering Fine-Arts-Students from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) the opportunity to gain experience in the implementation of "Kunst am Bau"-works and the associated process. The Urban Art Parcours at the drainage aqueducts will be exhibited from June 6, 2022 to February 27, 2023 under the title "Aqueous Transmissions" in the industrial quarter around Klingenpark.

The cooperation projects of the Fine Arts students of ZHdK with the Building Department of the Canton of Zurich are all about "Kunst am Bau" and the question: What do young artists have to pay attention to when presenting their ideas for art projects to a potential client? The implementation of the cooperative projects "Sporthallenprovisorien" and "Provisorische Entwässerungsaquädukte" provide students with answers to this question and the opportunity to gain experience in the implementation and process of "Kunst am Bau"-works.

Breaking new ground with temporary sports hall structures

The Building Department of the Canton of Zurich has broken new ground with the construction projects for the three temporary sports halls at the Freudenberg/Enge, Uetikon am See and Irchel campuses of the University of Zurich. The tender for the "Kunst am Bau" was explicitly directed at Fine Arts Master students of ZHdK. The goal was to develop a work of art on, in and around the building at each location that would emphasize the young, fresh as well as sports-oriented character of the location.

From a total of 17 art projects submitted, a jury selected three works: "Higher Goals" by Gregor Vogel for the Irchel Campus (to be realized in 2024), "Community Show" by Julia Nusser and Tereza Glazova for the Uetikon am See Cantonal School, and "Bouncing Balls" by Otto Szabo and Cristian Zabalaga for the Freudenberg and Enge Cantonal Schools (both to be realized in 2022). "Community Show" deals with human fragility and the theme of vulnerability, which plays a special role in sports - a "body-centered place." Julia Nusser and Tereza Glazova print works by invited artists on selected walls, thereby developing a "safe space" in which themes of minority, identity, toxic masculinity, sexuality, vulnerability and intimacy are dubbed. With "Bouncing Balls," on the other hand, wall sculptures are planned that depict different moments and perspectives of the impact of sports balls and the resulting ball deformation - a moment that is imperceptible to our eyes due to its speed.

    Temporary drainage aqueducts

For the new construction of the vocational school for the building trades (BBZ) on Limmatstrasse, a drainage aqueduct is being built as part of the excavation work, which will pump the water from the excavation pit into a tank. From there, it will flow into the Sihl River just before it joins the Limmat. The aqueduct extends over a length of approx. 260 meters and has to cross five different, highly frequented traffic routes (cars, streetcars, pedestrians, bicycles).

The structural engineering office of the Canton of Zurich used this temporary structure of the aqueduct for the realization of an urban art project: Bachelor students Fine-Arts of the ZHdK were given the opportunity to gain their first art on building experience and to present their projects to the public at an inner-city location. The responsible jury decided to execute all eight submitted projects, which will lead through the lively neighborhood around Klingenpark as an urban art parcours under the title "Aqueous Transmissions" during the installation period from June 6, 2022 to February 27, 2023.

The projects are as diverse as they are vibrant. In "Pet Pilze" by Floyd Bolliger, thermally deformed pet bottles sprout like mushrooms from pipes. In Anna Chiavi's project "Sound," a sound composition can be called up using a QR code. Ricardo Meli and Pascal Weidmann have produced metal pots and filled them with soil in "Nährboden und Spuren" (Nutrient Soil and Traces) - whatever grows in them, including human waste. The work is an analogy to the planned school where young people grow up; it brings non-cultivated nature into the city and shows what happens around the place and leaves traces.

Other projects include: "Untitled" by Taiga Nakazaki, "Living Situation" by Laura Nan, "No Gas" by Marc Kaempfen, "The Essence of Life" by Alison Antonioli, "Untitled" by Tamara Vepkhvadze.
