The short animation «Proceed to Rescue» by Enrico Bachmann shows how new European laws are making it more difficult for NGOs to rescue ships in distress on the world's deadliest migration route across the Mediterranean. The diploma project was created as part of the Bachelor's Major in Knowledge Visualisation at the ZHdK in collaboration with the NGO «SOS Méditerranée Schweiz».

SOS Méditerranée is a civil society, European humanitarian maritime rescue organisation. It was founded in May 2015 in response to the recurring shipwrecks and the lack of sufficient rescue capacity in the central Mediterranean.

«Proceed to Rescue» shows how NGOs are sometimes faced with the choice of breaking the law or saving lives - an issue that many people are not familiar with. It encourages viewers to reflect on the fact that NGOs dedicated to rescuing ships in distress at sea always risk being punished for their work.

Enrico Bachmann was also awarded the ZHdK Graduate Award Bachelor Design 2024 for his diploma project. Find out more here.
