Colonial Switzerland: How to show it? with RELAX and Ashkira Darman

In discussion. Thursday, January 16th 10.30-12h. Konradstrasse 72, ZH

Published on 29.12.2024

How can we address historical entanglements that are inscribed in our bodies? And what does this have to do with institutional (educational) spaces?

The Minor Diversity Politics and the Arts cordially invites:

Traces of Switzerland's colonial past can be found everywhere. Often, however, they remain hidden or are seen out of their historical context. How can we showcase these colonial traces without reproducing them? How can we make it clear that historical events are inscribed in our bodies without resorting to colonial imagery and aesthetics? In conversation with RELAX (chiarenza & hauser & co) and Ashkira Darman, and inspired by the exhibition at the Landesmuseum, we would like to discuss possibilities of giving visibility. We are also interested in how looking at (post-)colonial Switzerland can sharpen our view of constructions of gender and gender relations: How can these connections and other intersections be told? Finally, and in view of a vision for co-designing and redesigning future (educational) institutional spaces, it is also about how our questions and debates can lead to the creation of spaces that include experiences of marginalization, of immigration and migration experiences as part of Swiss stories.

Host and organization: Sophie Vögele

* Hosted within the exhibition week of “stories that educate us” (in collaboration with the Project Recht auf Wir and the Major Master Critical Social Practice in Art Education CSPiAE, ZHdK)
