ZHdK International Dossier: How did you choose the university for your exchange semester?
Alina Birjuk: I am studying photography at my home university, the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn. I felt like stepping out of my comfort zone and expanding my visual perspective. When I discovered ZHdK's Subject Area โTrends & Identityโ, I knew that it was the one! It is the perfect course for anyone who wants a comprehensive experience in Design. Last semester, we created our own product designs, crafted a short documentary, and researched innovative and sustainable materials.
In addition, I was attracted to Switzerland because itโs a very beautiful country and it shares similarities with Estonia in terms of size and innovation, yet is unique enough to offer an exceptional study abroad experience.
What has been the biggest surprise at the new university and in the new city?
The most significant surprise since studying at ZHdK is the distinctive approach and structure of learning. I particularly relish how theory dominates our Mondays, with the rest of the week dedicated to working on one practical project. Consequently, every four weeks, we showcase a brand new project or artistic piece.
Attending classical music concerts at the Tonhalle is among my favourite pastimes in Zurich. Additionally, I delight in exploring the city on foot, as it enables me to become an observant photographer. Despite its modest size, Zurich exudes vibrancy and boasts a wealth of world-class art, design and music.
What has been the biggest challenge of your semester abroad?
One of the greatest challenges I faced during my semester abroad was the language barrier, particularly in the courses taught solely in German. However, this sparked a newfound motivation to learn the language at a faster pace. Initially, adapting to an unfamiliar environment can be somewhat overwhelming. However, with time I have become more comfortable and familiar with the city.
What is your favourite learning so far?
Studying abroad helped me to better manage my time and realise how important it is to make time for fun activities. I learned the importance of planning my free time so that I can relax and grow as a person. I think it's crucial to find a balance between academic commitments and leisure activities, so I try to keep them separate, especially at the weekends. I find it difficult sometimes to separate work and leisure when you have a strong passion for your work.
Do we need art? And if so, why?
The need for art is undeniable for me. It has the power to connect individuals and foster meaningful dialogues. It has the ability to evoke emotions that we may not have known we had inside us. In instances where verbal language falls short, a single piece of art may resonate with us in a way that reveals the meaning behind our thoughts and emotions.
