Lisa Fasching likes to delve into the workshops and the Materials Archive. In her projects, the art education student wants to ask important social questions and make her experiences aesthetically experienceable.

Martina Egli: What are your current projects?
Lisa Fasching: I’m collecting, researching and experimenting. Developing and considering inputs, materials and possibilities. It’s great that the Bachelor in Art Education enables us to explore the different workshops and a wide variety of techniques. This helps us build a repertoire that we can fall back on later. In my projects, communicative and cognitive aspects are very important: I want my artistic work and outreach projects to raise questions and arouse curiosity.

Do we need art? And if so, why?
I don’t believe that we need the art market, which revolves around money and investments. But art itself, that is, the creative process, is primordial, a basic social need. We need art as a socio-political mouthpiece and also as a way of coming to terms with our experiences.

What would you change at ZHdK?
I’d change the lighting, especially in the seminar and lecture rooms, where you need to concentrate fully. The lighting conditions in those rooms can be quite energy-sapping. Installing warmer lighting at the Toni-Areal would be a project in itself.

What are your plans after graduation?
I’ve thought about getting involved in politics. But I now realize that art and education offer opportunities to become an activist and change society. So I’ll definitely work on activist projects in the future. I find it important to promote openness to different realities. We shape our world together, and this should be oriented towards diversity rather than merely towards a norm.

What has been your best decision so far?
To pursue a creative path. I realized that I wanted to study for myself, not simply for a degree — I’d do that again immediately.
