With the so-called Spatial Turn at the end of the 1980s, space has become important as a category of analysis in cultural studies. Instead of seeing it merely as a container of the people and cultures being studied, it is now seen as the dynamic structure of social relations, as a context-dependent construction of perception. Space is no longer the object of our interest, but part of our respective thinking, doing and acting. The lecture group will explore this significance of space, especially for the dissertation projects pursued in the programme. Whether we focus more on the differentiation of different spatial constructions (from visual, haptic, olfactory to sound space, from social or gender-specific to virtual space) or rather concentrate on the process of sedimentation of spatial experience into a form of bodily knowledge with consequences also for artistic practice, we will find out and decide together in the group.
