    Position Paper

Artificial Intelligence has long since arrived in our everyday lives –  and yet the speed of development remains such that it presents us with new questions and challenges on an almost daily basis. At ZHdK, we want to approach the topic with Critical Curiosity: with the openness and the joy inherent in artistic experimentation, but also with the courage and the determination to analyse and criticize.

This Position Paper outlines the fundamental values at ZHdK in relation to Artificial Intelligence. Specific rules for the use of AI technologies at the university are set out in a designated Information Sheet (with ZHdK-Login). Professional Development and Lifelong Learning opportunities in the field of AI are being offered and advertised in the respective departments and organisational units. This Position Paper was drawn up as a living document by the Digital Council on behalf of the University Board, and will be updated as required.

    Artificial Intelligence requires human competence
We enable ZHdK members to critically examine Artificial Intelligence and to use AI applications responsibly. We continuously reflect on and evaluate the opportunities, challenges and risks of any AI applications used at ZHdK, and we adjust their usage accordingly.

    New tools, same values
We are open to developments in Artificial Intelligence and curious about the artistic possibilities it opens up, while remaining firm in our values regarding data and privacy protection, diversity and equality, the health and safety of university members and our social responsibility.

Artificial Intelligence is a collective achievement – and a collective responsibility
We use Artificial Intelligence in the knowledge that we are sharing the work, but possibly also the views and biases of others. We are aware of our individual responsibility in the legally compliant usage of AI applications and its declaration in accordance with academic conventions, as well as the social responsibility associated with the use of potentially risky technologies.

As much freedom as possible, as much safety as necessary
We defend artistic freedom and support the experimental exploration of Artificial Intelligence – as well as everybody's fundamental right to safety, privacy, data sovereignty and the recognition of their intellectual property.

Transparency requires trust; transparency creates trust
We trust that ZHdK members are aware of their responsibility in dealing with Artificial Intelligence and that they declare its use truthfully. We cultivate this trust in each other through the transparent use of Artificial Intelligence and an open error culture.
