    FAQ

What do I gain by completing a Master of Design?
Thanks to the research, communications and commercial competencies acquired as part of the Master’s degree, a graduate is ideally placed to fill a position of responsibility in a company or educational institution.
Which preparatory courses are recognized for this degree?
We will recognize a Bachelor’s degree or the previous degree qualification in a design or design-related discipline (e.g. engineering, computer science, architecture, art or marketing).
Are foundational concepts of design taught as part of the Master’s degree?
The focus of study depends on how the individual project or thesis is developed. Students are already expected to possess the necessary basic knowledge. In-depth insights into discipline-specific design competencies, theories and methodology then build upon this.
Can the degree be completed part-time?
The Master’s degree is a full-time course with a correspondingly full curriculum. We would advise against taking on additional work responsibilities during the semester. The degree can be suspended for a maximum period of two years (this requires de-registration). It is possible to configure the length of study between a maximum of three and five semesters.
Do students receive a workstation and computer?
The ZHdK provides all students with a personal or a flexible workstation. Students must bring their own computers. There are additional computer rooms and public workstations available at the Toni-Areal campus.
Which workshops and laboratories can I use?
Students generally have access to all facilities. Students must undertake the relevant introductory courses depending on the preparatory courses undertaken.
Is it possible to transfer to another university for a semester as part of the Master’s programme?
It is possible to transfer to a partner university (either in Switzerland or abroad) for one semester (this usually takes place in the second semester of the course), or to complete the major subject component of the Master’s degree as part of a trainee placement with a partner institution.
How much does the application for the Master’s programme cost?
The cost of applying to be considered for admission is CHF 100, and the entrance examination for the assessment of eligibility costs CHF 200 (payment receipts need to be provided at the time of the entrance examination).
