Objective

    Participants acquire a professional qualification in Music Therapy that is interdisciplinary, practical and theoretical in nature. They learn how to do music therapy work in an academically sound, professionally competent manner with people of all age groups in psychological, (special) education, medical, social therapeutic and rehabilitative institutions in outpatient practice as well as in special areas of music education and animation, prevention and mental health.

    More specifically, graduates of the training programme Music Therapy are capable of:

    • using the medium of music to carry out treatments designed to improve patients’ processes of perception, expression and communication in line with specific diagnoses and medical indications, and to support positive changes in behaviour;
    • substantiating medical indications and contraindications for music therapy and establishing a setting that is appropriate for the patient's stage of development and the issues that he or she faces;
    • of evaluating music therapy processes from various perspectives and documenting such processes;
    • examining scientific findings and experience from the field of music therapy and basic disciplines such as psychology, psychotherapy, special education, medicine, musicology, music psychology, music education and musical practice in order to determine their relevance for the student's own music therapy specializations and to incorporate such knowledge and experience into treatments wherever necessary;
    • systematically reflecting upon and describing music therapy activities and their effects and limitations, as well as methodological approaches and aspects of the therapeutic interaction and relationship;
    • collaborating with colleagues in their field from Switzerland and abroad and communicating and cooperating across disciplines;
    • involving relevant healthcare and social welfare institutions in their treatment and interaction with patients and clients, and taking into account the applicable legal and social framework conditions;
    • working efficiently with the material and services available to them;
    • reacting and behaving reflectively and independently even in critical situations.
