CAS Church Music Pop and Jazz
The degree programme involves planning, using and reflecting on pop and jazz in a church context. The core subjects of this continuing education degree course are:
– Conceptualization of church music practice incorporating pop and jazz
– Grooves and accompaniment patterns on the piano
– Foundations in drums and e-bass
– Playing different styles together in a band, leading a band gospel choir
– Literature studies
– Music as a liturgical component of a church service
– Work experience placement in a popular-music, church-related project
– Designing an individual project of choice
This continuing education degree programme was designed in collaboration with ZHdK and representatives of the Evangelical Reformed Church and the Catholic Church in the Canton of Zurich.
Structure of the degree programme
CAS Church Music Pop and Jazz
The CAS degree programme runs for two semesters. It starts in the autumn semester. The CAS is made up of the following five modules:
— Module 1: Band music in the church – foundations of playing together
— Module 2: Band music in the church and foundations of sound engineering
— Module 3: Popular music in church services
— Module 4: Band work in the church and pop & jazz arranging
— Module 5: Final module “Best Practice and Project Perspective”.

In the “CAS Church Music Pop and Jazz ”, students acquire the knowledge and skills to plan, use and reflect on pop and jazz in the church environment.
