    Hand Lab

The Zurich Centre for Musiciansโ€™ Hands

The Zurich Centre for Musiciansโ€™ Hands (ZZM) is the Hand Lab of Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), is integrated into the Music Physiology and Preventive Medicine field of ZHdK, and is affiliated to the Institute for Music Research.

The methodology applied โ€“ the Biomechanical Hand Measurement (BHM) โ€“ was developed by doctor and musician Christoph Wagner, who conducted research at the Max-Planck Institute in Dortmund and at Hanover University of Music.

In parallel with ongoing fundamental research, the ZZM offers advice by means of the BHM. The BHM makes it possible to devise individualized strategies for optimizing practice and performance habits, as well as recommendations on an objective basis pertaining to the improvement of instruments in ergonomic terms. Measurements and advice are free for students and staff of ZHdK. The ZZM is also open to external persons.
