    More: CAS Visual Storytelling

Content and structure of the programme

The CAS Visual Storytelling teaches conceptual, design and technical skills for the design of analogue and digital media. The focus is on different narrative forms and strategies in cross-media areas of application: Book and magazine design, interactive publications, apps, websites and social media.

In terms of content, the CAS continues the tradition of teaching typography, layout and editorial design and expands this with the latest technical and narrative approaches. The design resources of visual communication, motion design, interactive elements, codes and memes become integral components of contemporary visual storytelling.

Participants conceive content and information as visual narratives. They combine analogue and digital design methods, reflect on the requirements and limits of different media and exploit the potential they offer. In this way, they develop contemporary narrative and publication formats that stand out, make a statement and are instantly recognisable.

Participants learn, among other things, the fundamentals of digital typography, traditional and contemporary design methods, the opportunities provided by motion design and strategies for hybrid editorial design.

The CAS Visual Storytelling runs for 2 semesters and consists of the following modules:

      • Module 1 – Typography, Skills & Tools

This module explores the practical and design fundamentals of typography, layout and visual storytelling in analogue and digital media. The focus is on the characteristics, differences and effects of fonts, layout and typography in print and screen applications. Participants expand their specialist design knowledge and acquire the requisite specialist vocabulary.

        Focus areas:

        • Organisation, weighting and sorting of information
        • Storytelling, rhythm and structure
        • Experimental design methods as well as process-based, systematic design
        • Introduction to digital sketching, design and prototyping tools
        • Fundamentals of digital typography, screen layout and motion design
      • Module 2 – Print narratives

This module deals with editorial design as a creative and narrative practice. The focus is on the conception, structuring and implementation of complex content and information as well as the development of coherent visual narrative styles in analogue and hybrid publications. Participants learn how to structure content dramaturgically, stage it typographically and communicate it in a targeted way.

        Focus areas:

        • Structuring, weighting and staging complex content that consists of images, text and graphics
        • Targeted reading guidance, the drafting of stories and visual dramaturgy
        • Characteristics and requirements of different publication formats and text types
        • Materiality, haptics and spatial dimensions of physical publications
        • Cross-media publication strategies
      • Module 3 – Digital Narratives

This module is dedicated to experimental forms of digital storytelling. Participants develop narrative concepts for interactive and multimedia applications and design digital publishing experiences that combine typography, movement, interaction and audiovisual elements. The focus is on new forms of reading, narrating and navigating in the digital space.

        Focus areas:

        • Digital design methods
        • Interaction, motion design, sound
        • Responsive design and screen typography
        • Requirements and potential benefits of different digital reading modes
        • Digital reading features and interactive user guidance
        • Prototyping complex digital publication forms
        • Digital publishing strategies
      • Final thesis

At the end of the course, participants complete project work, which they explore further in self-study. This project work is presented within the scope of a final presentation.
