Hong Kong & Shenzhen (autumn 2018)

    The first study trip as part of the CAS Design Cultures programme visits Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Exploration of aspects of different (design) cultures in Hong Kong and workshops with local players and an opportunity to practice intercultural collaboration. Excursion to the emerging metropolitan city of innovation Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

    • Key information at a glance

      What: Study trip to Hong Kong including day trip to Shenzhen
      Date: October (each year)
      Outward and return journey: Flights to be individually booked
      Accommodation: 7 nights in a 3–4 star hotel
      Food: With just a few exceptions, food is to be paid for by participants themselves
      Costs: CHF 2800 (plus CHF 200 application fee) or component of the CAS Design Cultures programme

    • Programme

      Tuesday – Kick-off, History of Hong Kong & Getting to know each other
      Starting into the study week at 10 am. Insight into the historical development of the city and other cultural aspects. Tour of selected Hong Kong neighbourhoods.

      Wednesday – Context, politics and new aspects
      Deeper insight into the dynamics of the city and exploration of the political and social dimensions. Immersion in different scenes (e.g. start-ups).

      Thursday – Day trip to Shenzhen
      Trip to the booming innovation mega-city Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Visit to innovation clusters and lectures with selected lecturers at the Harbin Institute of Technology.

      Friday – Design focus & agency visits
      Visits to selected design agencies and learning about different aspects of design.

      Saturday – Arts & Culture
      Get to know Hong Kong's cultural hot spots and exchange with important exponents of the cultural scene.

      Sunday – Free day or excursion (optional)
      There is no fixed programme for Sunday. You can visit one of the nearby islands and/or go to a horse race.

      Monday – Design Challenge at the HKDI
      One-day workshop together with professionals from various industries at the Hong Kong Institute of Design. Working on urgent challenges within the framework of a design challenge. Followed by a closing dinner.

      Tuesday – Surprise insight & conclusion
      Sleep in and visit a surprise guest in the field of international trade. Joint reflection and conclusion of the study trip.
