The CAS combines practical spatial design basics with theoretical knowledge and reflection. On-site teaching at the ZHdK includes workshops, input lectures, exercises and work in laboratories. Aspects of spatial effects are examined and reflected upon in supervised group and individual exercises. Basic spatial design dimensions (material, form, colour, light, surfaces and spatial elements) are explained and tested. This also includes the worlds of botany, sounds and sensory events. This is complemented by craft-methodical exercises for brainstorming, creation, planning and presentation. Exchange in the group as well as networking with relevant companies and institutions are part of the learning environment.
CAS Atmospheric Design modules
The three CAS Atmospheric Design modules are logically sequenced and supplemented by an independent study assignment that builds upon the modules and is completed afterwards.
The first module offers a basic introduction to the elements of atmosphere, experience, function and spatial effects and the terms used to describe these. The second module links the concept of atmosphere to spatial phenomena and sensory qualities in a manner that enables participants to work creatively and effectively with these and discuss various options for their application. The third module focuses on communicating ideas and qualities for interior design, while involving users, residents or clients.
The three modules are linked by the participants’ own independent study project, which incorporates the three aspects of atmospheric effect, spaces and design components, and design communication. The 21 course days at ZHdK feature ideas and inspiration, workshops, excursions and creative work, while participants pursue in-depth study and the aforementioned independent study project throughout the duration of the CAS.
Module 1
Atmosphere and spatial impact: Skills, Tools and Knowledge
The first module deals with the basic definitions of atmosphere, narration and spatial effect. What actually is atmosphere, how is it created and experienced? How do we perceive atmosphere and do we all perceive it the same way? Through which elements does a room have an effect on us? How do functions shape the atmosphere? Can a room tell a story? We will work on these questions in inputs, workshops and experiments to arrive at a deeper understanding of atmosphere in spaces.
Module 2
Atmospheric design of spaces: Analysis, Ideation and Phenomena
The second module introduces the design of spaces. The use of specific methods and tools, from ideation and sketching to creating specific effects, is practised. What do elements such as structure, proportion and form contribute to the atmosphere? What phenomena are created by light, material, colour, materiality and structures? What influence do botany, smells, accessories and sounds have on rooms and how do I select them?
Module 3
Communicating spatial qualities and moods: Dialogue
The third module focuses on methods and tools for communication and design consulting. We practise analysing and explaining existing spatial situations, or those we have designed, and incorporating the needs of users in dialogue situations. We can distinguish between our own and others' perceptions and deal convincingly with the different typologies of spaces. We learn to use professional language, images, photography and presentation methods for communikacion and consultation.
Self-study
Between the individual course days, participants are required to review what they have learnt, expand upon it by consulting relevant literature and, above all, get to work developing their own project. We do this in teams, mentored by experts from the sector.
