All Major and Minors

With its major-minor study model, ZHdK enables its students to tailor their degree programme as individually as possible. The Major forms the core of the degree programme, which is thematically complemented or expanded upon by Minors. Alternatively, students may choose the Individual Study Programme (ISB), in which modules can be selected from a range of open courses. This diverse range of options is designed to meet the need to develop specific profiles for the working world of tomorrow.

    What is a major?

The major forms the core focus of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme and determines the degree title. This means it comprises 150 of a total of 180 credits in a Bachelor’s degree programme and 90 of a total of 120 credits in a Master’s degree programme. The major programme determines which department a student belongs to.

    What is a minor?

Compared to a major, a minor is a smaller programme of study. With a clear focus on a specific qualification, the minor is listed on the degree certificate. A minor comprises 30 credits or 15 credits.

In conjunction with the major, the minor serves the following purposes:

    In-depth study and specialization
Students have the opportunity to specialize within their field of study by engaging in an in-depth study of one of its sub-areas.

    Broadening and supplementing knowledge
Students can acquire knowledge, skills and competences in a additional field of study or a specific subject area.

    Individual Area of Study

In some degree programmes, students can choose an Individual Area of Study (ISB) instead of a minor. Courses taken as part of an ISB are cross-disciplinary and subject to special admissions requirements. The number of places is limited.
