    Submission Procedure for Sonic Works

TENOR Zurich 2024 invites artists to submit works whose notation is significantly related to technology and which have a clear connection to any of the conference topics. Within this premise, discussions of the following areas are particularly welcome:

      • Notation, performance or composition using the ‘Polytempo’ software (polytempo.zhdk.ch)
      • Computer aided composition: algorithmic and generative approaches, especially involving machine learning and artificial intelligence
      • Sonic works reflecting on formations of knowledge and power associated with forms of notation and corresponding technologies
      • Multisensory approaches, especially in the area of haptic feedback
      • Works for the Klavierautomat (‘piano automaton’) (link to technical description)
      • Technology-based notation methods for people with disabilities

      Formats

The call allows four presentation formats for works:

      • Works for ensemble with or without electronics
      • Works for chamber music with or without electronics
      • Electronic / electroacoustic works (without acoustic instruments or with purely electronic / electroacoustic instrumentations)
      • Installations (three different spaces)

      Instrumentations - Infrastructure

      • Ensemble
Ensemble works will be performed by the CNZ (Collegium Novum Zürich) under the direction of Lars Mlekusch. This category should include five to eight instruments.
Ensemble: (conductor), saxophone, trumpet, trombone, electric guitar, piano (keyboard), percussion, violin (alt. viola), violoncello, (electronics) (sound engineer)

      • Chamber music
Chamber music works will be studied and rehearsed by ZHdK students under the direction of a teacher. A maximum of four instruments can be combined in this category.
Flute (bass flute), saxophones, clarinet (bass clarinet), piano, violin, viola

      • Electronic / electroacoustic works
It is possible to perform works for up to 24.2 channels.

We also welcome proposals for pieces to be performed by/with the participants.

      • Installations
Installations can be entered for the following spaces with their specific infrastructure:

        • ICST Composition Studio
Surround / multichannel studio with a 17 speakers dome, two quadrophonic systems (rectangular and orthogonal), 5.1. and stereo monitoring. For a detailed description, consult the following link.

        • ICST Labor
Ambisonics system (24 speakers and 4 subwoofers). For a detailed description, consult the following link.

        • Kunstraum
          - Klavierautomat (‘piano automaton’) (link to technical description)
          - 4.1 speaker setting
          - For a detailed description of the room consult the following link.

The rooms are equipped with projectors, screens, computers, sound cards and standard studio gear. Installations using interfaces / displays going beyond the elements suggested here must be provided by the participants themselves. Transportation cost will not be covered by the conference.

      Technical support and rehearsal time

All works will receive support for performance. For chamber music works and works for large ensemble, rehearsal time with a sound engineer present is planned. The setup of the installations will be professionally supported, however, the main responsibility lies with the artists. The technical support for the installation is limited to six hours. Installations can be setup during three days (from 1 April till 3 April).

      Submission

A PDF file written in English containing the following should be provided:

      • Work description explaining artistic and technological concepts on a maximum of two pages and including a maximum of two links to demo videos about the notation (max. 5’) and sound samples
      • Complete score (in any form)
      • Technical rider with prerequisites pertaining to performance practice, equipment as well as necessary technical assistance
      • Biography of no more than 250 words

All submissions should be made through the conference EasyChair platform.

Work submissions should use the same Word or LaTeX template as the papers. For submissions, "Title" and "Abstract" are mandatory. Please use the "Abstract" field for the work description: download_tenor_templates (LaTex is encouraged)

Extended deadline for submissions: 30 November 2023

Notification will be given on 15 January 2024. Revisions will be due by 15 March 2024.
