Propaedeutic Studies

Propaedeutic Studies

At Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), we offer a foundation course serving to provide orientation and the fundamentals of art and design. Coursework prepares students for entry into arts university degree programmes. Our Propaedeutic Studies is designed as an ideal and recognised pathway into university degrees requiring a placement in a creative field.

Coursework is aimed at individuals possessing creative talent, who are initiative, prepared to view their work critically, interested in cultural matters, and aspiring to enter a university degree programme in art or design. Students seeking admission must be at least 18 years of age. They will hold either a secondary school certificate or a professional qualification. They will also have successfully completed our admissions procedure.

Our Propaedeutic Studies programme is available either as a two-semester, full-time course or as a three-semester, part-time course. Students providing evidence of previous training in a creative or artistic field will be required to attend one semester less. Full-time Propaedeutic Studies begin in  early February (spring semester) and last one year. Part-time Propaedeutic Studies begin in the autumn semester and last until the end of the following year.

Course objectives

Propaedeutic coursework provides an intensive introduction to working methods and procedures in art and design. It conveys broad and well-founded basic knowledge as well as a realistic picture of working in the arts and design. Inter- and disciplinary projects are designed to promote a cross-media approach and working methods. Coursework serves to strengthen independence and personal responsibility. Students are given individual supervision and tutoring.

Practical work is complemented with lectures and information events on art and design careers and available degree programmes. This enables students to better orient themselves and to review their ideas and aims.
